Interview with Julie Jansen excerpted from Developing Soft and Hard Skills for Career Growth and Higher Pay on MoneyGeek.com
Nathan: How can a job applicant best use or showcase their skills to stand out and increase their marketability?
Julie: As a career coach and resume writer, I find that many people are unable to identify more than five to eight skills that they possess and the ways they use them to make a difference in their job. So, it's a great exercise to open a blank document and list all the soft and technical skills you possess and your level of proficiency or expertise.

Nathan: What are the best resources you recommend to people who want to upskill?
Julie: There are so many great resources available for learning and upskilling. Options for taking courses are Udemy, Grow with Google, Linked In Leaming, Kahn Academy, TED-Ed, Git Hub, Alison and Learning Lab. Viewing industry webinars, listening to podcasts, watching virtual industry panels, attending a conference, and following news and articles to keep up with trends and innovations are helpful. However, most people learn more easily by doing something in real-time, so shadowing, cross-training, getting an internship or finding a freelance project will help you develop hands-on experience...
“...Being able to describe your technical and soft skills and the level of proficiency you possess is important. Employers are interested in what you've achieved, what you know how to do, and, most significantly, how you will do the same things for them.”
